dhelmise sank to the sandy bed, locking mar's pirate ship in place. she was right off the shore, thankfully where there was no fighting taking place. the onslaught between factions has headache-inducing and far more direct than she was used to. her battles for rocket were done from the shadows or the security of her ship, often in other regions. she was barely situated in hoenn and here she was, ordered to work intel.

another rocket had robbed some encrypted phone from a ranger during a skirmish, but it was buried on the beach over here for later pick-up. being that pick-up, mar found herself extending the wood bridge to dig into the sand. "let's go, kids!" despite the boring work assigned to her, she was in a good mood over avoiding the riffraff of the war. capsakid marched alongside her down the bridge, and clobbopus pushed past her and mar both to be the first one on the beach. "yeah, yeah, ye won. hustle up and look fer that phone, yea?" her pokemon got to digging at the beach, giving mar a moment to observe the shores for any obviously-disturbed areas.

Paxton had been pulled back from the fighting to monitor the more quiet sections of the island but also to rest. His team and him had been running back and forth all over the battlefield reinforcing positions or scouting new ones.[break][break]

Dug into his new position on the dunes, he had yet to see another sly patrol from Rocket fly by. Nor did they seem interested in storming the beach on a quieter front. He understands why when he catches a small boat anchoring itself to the shore and a woman and her pokemon hopping out. [break][break]

He holds his fire, trailing them with his scope as a little Furret peaks put as well waiting for her signal to engage. Quietly, he's thankful to avoid the HEATRAN scourge taking over the main tunnels.

capsakid and clobbopus continued to shovel through the sand a foot or two before moving on while mar walked the length of the beach to find anything obviously disturbed. the ocean was powerful, and it would resettle the coast's unruly sands in mere minutes, so she wasn't too surprised to see that the sands looked normal despite an encrypted phone being stashed here earlier.

aha!

clobbopus made a victorious sound. mar turned around to sea the pokemon holding a metal hoop earring. "no," she said with measured patience, feeling irritated more by being 'landed' than by clobbopus (arceus, she wanted to be back in her boat right now), "it's a phone, silly." she measured out its dimensions with her fingers. he saluted and got back to searching.

capsakid tapped her calf, causing her to turn around and see the grass type holding the encrypted league phone. mar patted the capsakid's head affectionately as she accepted the phone. it looked nothing special, except it was clearly a Ranger-issued device and covered in an ugly phone case meant to survive the environmental disasters they oft responded to.

Paxton's jaw tenses as he stares through the scope of his rifle. The phone is deliberate. It's gotta be. Why else bother digging it up and then risking coming back to shore for it. He can recognize the model, but he doesn't remember reports of anybody losing their phone. Not anyone he worked with anyway. During the fog of war, maybe the owner hadn't noticed yet. Either way, Rocket wanted it, and far be it to let them extract what they could, if anything, from it.

So takes in a breath, adjusting his aim as he stares the phone. He clicks his tongue softly, getting the attention of his Furret. "Sit this one out, kiddo." he murmured as he lightly tapped a pokeball to return her and swapped her out with a Shieldon who popped up gently a few feet behind me. "Might need you to do what you do best in a minute or two." he warned, voice low as he put focus back on the phone.

He pulls in the weapon tight, slowly but firmly pulling back the trigger. The shot cracks off, dull from the silencer, and the round flies, smashing into the phone. Pieces of it scatter up from the force.

the phone explodes in her hand.

mar stares at her empty hand, blinking. and then it fully registers.

her hand only aches slightly. whatever knocked the phone out had an angle to cause the phone splinter without exploding a hole into her hand. she instinctively looks up, but the sky is free of all but pelipper and wingull; she knew neither bird could create controlled explosions. capsakid had already begun searching the seaside for a target, but no ship had cannonballs small enough to make such a shot. clobbopus, on the other hand, started crawling up to the grass, moving in-land to find the assailant.

shit. she could rescue the sim card from the debris and take that in. rocket would have some tech-y like that, though she didn't know anyone by name. still, she was intended to deliver intel, so the sim card would have to do. she poked through the debris in the hot sand for the card.

The Shieldon readies itself to jump, but some is faster. Paxton's Furret does not listen to him, slithering away in the sand and nearly blending in with the dunes. Until its too late. The Furrest is already scurrying under the cover of the few dune grasses and sand before finding sometning small in their wake that the Rocket seemed to be looking for.

As they reach for it, the normal type goes in first, swiping up the little sim card in their mouth and offering big eyes to the pirate as they freeze before beginning to scurry away again. Paxton's Shieldon moved closer, round around the dune on Paxton's signal, an irritated hiss under his breath. The pokemon begins to glow softly, as if beginning to resonate with the tera crystals littering the island.

in the blink of an eye, mar's nemesis makes itself known.

"ye!" she cries out, pointing at the offending furret. its wide eyes do not display innocence but rather a teasing maliciousness that mar can't let go. clobbopus makes a battle cry, but she gestures at him with an open palm, stopping him. "nay! this rascal is mine!" foolishly, she pursues it, not as light-footed as the rodent pokemon. her momentum is eaten by the sand as she does her best to race after the normal-type. "i'll drown ye if ye don't relent!"

Paxton's Furret lets out a strangled squeak as it darts and zigzags away faster now that it's been spotted by the pirate. As Mar gives chase after the Furret, and she continues trying to lose the Rocket, Paxotn's Shielgon charge around the dune he's hiding on, reading to bowl over the others while their trainer is occupied. [break][break]

Paxton watches, aiming his rifle down at Mar, and slowly pulling back the trigger for- only for- [break][break]

SHIT!

He growls into his hands as the rifle gets stuck. Too much sand maybe? What the hell is going on here?? He hastily tries to clean off the rifle, as his Furret makes a fool out of the poor pirate, SIM card still tucked securely between her teeth.

mar gets close to the furret, but she misjudges how much the sand is going to eat the force she exudes when she launches herself at it, and she falls short of grabbing its tail, hands clutching at sand instead.

meanwhile, clobbopus has grown annoyed with mar's order to stay away. having no opponent, clobbpus creates a pile of wet sand right by the waves to punch into oblivion. capsakid, on the other hand, is uninterested in such stupid wastes of time but is also unwilling to ignore mar's order. she tries to negotiate with clobbopus to knock it off, but the fighter is uncaring of her plan.

mar pulls herself off the warm sand with a growl, but the furret is clearly un-catchable.

it's just a phone. she can insist it was recovered by Ranger scouts or destroyed by them while scouring the area for it, so there was nothing for mar to retrieve. a failed mission, but not by mar's hands. it's an easier pill to swallow, and it'll keep the higher-ups from grilling her.

"get back on the ship!" she shouts down the beach, letting her gaze wander towards where the furret skittered off to.

Foxtrot skitters just out of reach, trying to tire out Mar before escaping into the grass and up the dunes to Paxton. The Furret gives a happy squeak before dropping the sim card and something extra on the dirt as they arrived to the top of the hill. She's victorious and Paxton pauses in the scrubbing of his rifle. "Wh- Hey- Shhhh!" he blurted out trying to silence the bobbing Furret sticking up proudly off the cusp of the dune. [break][break]

As she gives away his location, Paxton scoops up the delivered SIM card anyway. Recovery accomplished but- [break][break]

As he did, the Shielgon run out from cover chasing Mar and her pokemon while screaming angrily and beginning to TERASTALIZE for good measure.

mar's boarding the ship as clobbopus and capsakid turn to the offending shieldon. capsakid's trying to pull clobbopus back, but the angry pokemon has been dying for some action. he pushes the shieldon around, completely confused by the terastalizing that he's never encountered before. clobbopus uses bind to hold the shieldon tight and keep it from running. oh, he's desperate to swing on the little ground type.

capsakid cries out angrily as she tries to pull the clobbopus away to board the ship and follow orders, but the sea pokemon is not listening to reason. all the while, mar's unaware, getting on ship and pulling dhelmise up to stop keeping the ship tight on the coast. arceus, she can't wait to leave this stupid beach and get away from that stupid furret.

Paxton's still struggling, calling back his Furret but she's delighted at her job well done and runs back onto the sand to squeak taunts at Mar and her crew. As she jumps around in the sand to continue her taunts, dream mist begins to rise from the edge of the shore. [break][break]

The little Shielgon is trap stomping around angrily and trying to headbutt the Clobbopus and Capsakid back. But at it does, it begins to get dragged away by something stepping out of the small clouds of dream mist, a BRUTE BONNET moves out of the pink clouds, angry and hungry as it begins to ABSORBthe life from the dinosaur who shrieks and writhes, before slowing down as it turns into a dry corpse. [break][break]

"Shit- Foxtrot, get back here! We're leaving!" Paxton save, throwing his rifle on his back and beginning to call back his partner, onyl to watch the weasel get clobbered into the ground by another BRUTE BONNET.
